Wondering what to do to welcome Spring into your home? Look outside your window for the answers. When all the traces from Winter’s hibernation are swept away, new life has a chance to be revealed. This is the time of year to remove the layers to see what new look and feeling might be waiting for you.

Launder and pack away heavy blankets and wool throws. Off come the flannel sheets in exchange for the cool freshness of cotton. Stacks of books from winter reading can be shelved or passed on and unfinished Winter projects can be boxed up to be revisited again next year. Look hard to see all the old wreaths, dried flowers and struggling plants that need to be discarded. Don’t rush in right away to replace them. Live with the freshness of open space for a while.

A powerful collective consciousness has evolved around the ideas of spring cleaning, which originally signified and welcomed the fertility and rebirth associated with the season. If you are too busy to clean as you would like, hire someone to help. Even four hours of professional cleaning will produce significant results. The cleaner and more energetically clear you house is, the easier it will be to craft an environment that truly supports you life.

If you’re someone who loves china and glassware, consider identifying certain sets or pieces as seasonal favorites. Lighter, brighter flower patterns are wonderful to bring out in Spring and Summer. Pack away the darker, heavier pieces for use in Fall and Winter. As the seasons change you’ll look at these pieces you haven’t seen in five or six months as if they were new. You’ll save space in your cabinets and make it easier to access the pieces you want to use.

The most powerful aspect of Feng Shui is not necessarily the moving and rearranging of pieces. Once the new arrangement is set it is the “intention” that is the powerful tool. After you have cleared away the clutter and are beginning to put things into place, stay conscious about your own intention. It may be to experience the freshness of the new season, to create more order around your desk or to provide harmony or sensuality in a bedroom. State your intention and reason for making the shift aloud to yourself.
